I am inclined to think that probably the worst problem with IBM's marketing is the target audience. You have me well and truly convinced that Lotus is a better alternative. The problem is, that you need to be able to convince my boss who is not as computer literate as I am. He only knows what he uses at home which is quite often Microsoft and almost never Lotus.
I personally see Symphony as a significant inroad to the home computing environment but would much rather see some sort of free mail client, even if it only handled pop accounts. It would be good if the free mail client worked on multiple operating systems and had a very similar interface to Lotus Notes. Perhaps even integration with Symphony would be a bonus. I know that there are already a number of free mail clients out there, most notably Thunderbird but I can't see any other way for IBM to get Lotus style technology into the hands of ordinary (non-tech) people.
The biggest advantage that Microsoft seems to have is that people feel like they already know how to work their products because they have been using cut down versions of them in their home environment. Outlook Express, Microsoft Works and Internet Explorer are perfect examples of these.
The success that Mozilla Firefox has had recently is a good indicator that if a good product comes along at a time when Microsoft is dropping the ball, it has a good chance of being adopted.
